Herbs
are plants that can provide lots of benefits for other people.
Some herbs are used as medicinal purposes and some are used
to add flavor to foods. There are many more other uses of herbs
that make it a popular plant to be grown by people.
Herbs can also be grown indoors. This
makes it easier for some people who may have a hard time maintaining
plants outdoors. Here are some of the things needed to grow
herbs indoors.
Even though herbs can be grown indoors,
it is important to give them a vast amount of light. This is
because herbs are usually grown at the Mediterranean region
which makes their nature to love the sun.
Light is important for herbs to grow
as stated above. Aside from giving it the 4 hours of light a
day, it may be best to give it more light artificially. During
the winter, this artificial light will provide more use. The
light that comes from the sun during winter is weak.
The herbs leaves will be greatly dependent
on the kind of light it receives. Leaves that are highly-lit
are strong, thick and narrow but are not that efficient in producing
their own food. This is because they are accustomed to having
lots of light and won’t produce much for themselves. When brought
indoors this plant will turn brown and drop its leaves.
One example is the Rosemary. This herb
has a difficult time adjusting when brought indoors. The herb
will starve itself first and eventually dry up and die. To prevent
this from happening, the herb should be gradually adjusted to
the lower light. Put the herb in a partially shaded area for
3 weeks. Then, bring it in a much deeper shade for another couple
of weeks; eventually bringing the herb indoors. The best way
to know that the herb is ready to go indoors is when new growth
starts to blossom.
Soil is the next thing to be taken
care off to produce healthy herbs. Herbs need to have excellent
drainage to grow, especially during the winter months. Winter
months prevents the herbs from transpiring faster. Sometimes
the nutrients are sacrificed when drainage is done. To prevent,
add perlite or sharp sand.
To make the flavors stronger when growing
the herbs indoors, it is important to give supplementary feedings.
Feedings such as organic fish or liquid fertilizer will greatly
help. When the herbs are actively growing, feed them once a
week.
Regarding water, herbs should only
be watered when the soil is really dry. Herbs need to be watered
less often and carefully.
