As a newbie it’s best to start out pretty small. It would be pretty hard and stupid to immediately waste your time building a grandiose garden when you have no expertise yet. Aside from the time you’ll be wasting, you’ll also be wasting money. Start small get the hang of it first. It’s best you get a garden box first.

The main reason you would have a garden is because you’d want to be able to look at it. So it would be best you decide the best place for you to put your garden. The ideal place for you to put your garden is place where you could be able to see it daily. This helps you to be motivated on working on it constantly. Plants tend to naturally face the sun, so there will be certain times that the plant will face away from you.

You should also learn more about the plants you would have planted. There are certain plants that require certain living climates. Those plants may not thrive in your area. For instance, vegetables or flowering plants require 6 hours of sunlight. You should also consider the kind of soil your garden has. Plants usually require pH levels of neutral acidity.

The next step is where the hard work usually starts. You would then need to prepare the garden bed. The site you choose will naturally have grass or probably weeds. You would obviously need to remove them before you can plant anything.

The best time to prepare the garden is during the fall. This is because the grass will be given a chance to decompose during the winter. Then the new grass or weeds will begin to grow during spring time. That’s why it’s suggestible to completely remove the grass.

Get a flat edged spade that is sharp to slice out the sod. Removing the sod helps if you have bad soil. This is because you can be able to amend it with organic matter and other nutrients. Removing the sod will make you lose the good top soil you have. Don’t give up though even if it is very hard work.

If you already have great soil it may be possible to sod it. You can just leave the grass in place and place a thick layer of newspapers about 8 to 10 sheets. After covering the grass with newspaper wet it thoroughly. Then cover the newspaper again with 4-6 inches of good soil. When the newspaper becomes decomposed, this will help cover up the weeds and turf. There will still be few weeds that will poke out. But if you’re not lazy enough, you can weed them out.

You can save a lot of money from fertilizers if you have good soil. The soil will feed your plants if you have fed the soil with great amount of amendments.
