Figuring Out the Soil

Having a garden is a great way to relax for some people. Gardening is a hobby that most people should consider. Having a great view of landscape to see when you are quite down can help liven up your mood in a way. Just looking at those colorful flowers can make a person appreciate some of the finer things in life. Those are only a few joys of having a garden.

However before enjoying the benefits of having a garden, you would need to work on it too. Having a nice garden is just not a sudden growth of beautiful plants in your lawn. You would have to start out by trying to figure out where would be the right place to place your plants. You’d need to decide a place where the plant can get the right amount of sunshine. The amount of sunshine depends on a plant you get. You’d also need to consider if you’d want the plant facing you during certain times. Since plants tend to face the sun, there will be times that it will be not facing you. An advice here is that if you are just a newbie in gardens is that you start small. Also put the plants where you can always see them, to keep you motivated on continuing to grow your garden.

After being able to choose the place, you would then need to check the soil’s ph. This is important because it tells you the acidity and alkaline levels of the soil. The plants will not take up nutrients when the soil’s ph is not an acceptable range.

Most plants only require neutral pH levels of 6.2 to 6.8. There are however that are more particular. If you buy your plants from a nursery there will be tags that tell you the preferred pH level of the plants. If there isn’t any tag, it can survive on neutral pH level soils.

You can also go to your local cooperative extension offices or nurseries to have the soil’s nutrients, minerals and texture be checked. The texture of the soil refers to whether the soil is rocky or ideal, sandy or sandy loam or even heavy clay. After consulting with what kind of soil it is, they can give you advice as to how it can become better with a few organic matters such as compost.

Having your soil checked out is an important factor when starting a garden. You might find yourself hoping for a garden when you find out that you don’t have a soil. You may only have a bulk of rocks under it. But if you’re lucky there might be fossils. It may be a dirty work to handle the soil, but if your serious about gardening you’d have to do it.
